More consumers shopped for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata in May than for any other vehicle in the automotive industry, Alexandria Hyundai announced.

Compete, a Kantar Media company, compiled data across all major brands and found that the Sonata appeared on 130,000 car shopping lists, more than Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Honda Civic and Ford Fusion, vehicles often at the top of such lists.

With so many customers researching the Sonata online, it comes as no surprise that the sedan was a large contributor to the tremendous success Hyundai experienced in June.  As a company, sales were up 35 percent compared to the same month last year.  The Sonata added to that increase with gains of its own, up 49 percent from last June.

For the third straight month, the Sonata was also America’s third-highest selling mid-size, well ahead of other vehicles in its class such as Chevy Malibu, Nissan Altima, and Ford Fusion.

Sales aren’t only up for June, but for the year to date as well with Hyundai on pace to surpass 500,000 vehicles sold for the first time in company history.

Hyundai also increased market share year-over-year for the 18^th consecutive month.  The most recent numbers drove Hyundai’s market share to 11.6 percent, a substantial increase from just the 7.6 percent it held in December of 2009.  That figure is also higher than Nissan’s current 11.2 percent and is within striking distance of Honda at 12.9 percent and Toyota at 14.2 percent.

“Consumers are discovering that the all-new 2011 Sonata builds on the nameplate’s legacy of value with exciting design, best-in-class fuel economy and outstanding residual value,” said Scott Margason, director of product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The combination makes Sonata a top contender in the competitive mid-size category, so we are pleased, but not surprised, by the market reception so far.”
